Cardboard Coffins

In recent years cardboard coffins are becoming a very popular option. Seen as eco-friendly, modern and now using modern digital printing can be decorated in high quality designs as varied as your imagination.

The coffins we supply have no fixings at all and the cardboard are folded in a way that the structure is maintained. The finished item is incredibly strong and can hold considerable weight. Our standard cardboard coffins will support a person of up 23 Stone. If the person is heavier we can do this with special provision, please let us know.

We supply coffins that are traditional coffin shaped (sarcophagus) i.e. narrower at the head and toes than at the shoulders and also Casket (rectangular) shaped – some customers prefer this shape, but this a purely personal choice.

We can supply our coffins with strap fabric handles – please let us know if you need to have these fiited.

In Loving Memory Cardboard Coffin - Price Reduced!Our fabric coffins have a rigid cardboard structure but then have a decorated cover called a pall.

All our cardboard coffins are manufactured in a factory in the East of England, Unlike many coffins which are either imported, or the materials are imported, . They cremate with 90% lower carbon emissions than a standard chipboard coffin and for burial they are 100% biodegradable making them more environmentally friendly.

Made from biodegradable cardboard, from at least 70% post consumer waste sourced from local mills. Any new fibre / wood pulp is purchased from reputable sources which adhere to the forestry management and sustainability bodies (SFI / FSC / PEFC). We do not buy material from unidentified sources.

Corn starch glues are used during construction and the use of wax coated lining and natural rope handles ensures the product is 100% biodegradable. Low resource manufacturing process and low emission levels when cremated. Environmentally sympathetic and certified non-toxic our cardboard coffins are suitable for both burial and cremation services. Product and all materials are manufactured in the UK.

Our coffins have been tested by the federation of British Cremation Authorities and also comply with the low emission levels set by the Governments Environmental Act. Most importantly, they conform to the highest standards required by Funeral homes, Crematoriums and Woodland burial sites.

It was first produced for a liner in tall hats, which were common place in the funeral industry. At the time it was called pleated paper. When mass production began in 1874, in its single face form, it was also used for wrapping bottles, lamps and chimneys. A few short years later Corrugated cardboard had become the worlds’ favourite packaging material and still is today.

The world has recognized Corrugated cardboard as a renewable, recyclable, biodegradable and compostable product for over a hundred years and embraced it for its many uses and its environmental benefits. Corrugated and paper based products surround our everyday lives, you only need to look at your daily activities to appreciate the level. All the environmentally conscious among us are contributing to the UKs recycling schemes and landfill prevention. With a recycling rate of over 80%, corrugated has the best UK recycling record of any packaging material.

As a consequence of recycling at least 70% of the materials used for Greenfield Creations cardboard/eco-friendly coffins will come from post consumer waste. This contribution by the eco conscious among us will aid in reducing the consumption of invaluable raw materials a little longer. It is important to remember that the vast majority of the timber from trees goes to construction and furniture making. Papermakers increasingly use the forest thinning and sawmill waste.

Every time a fibre is recycled it loses some of its strength and the fibre lengths are decreased. You can only recycle cardboard about 6 times as it becomes unstable and new fibres need to be introduced. All our new fibres are purchased from Forest certified sources. Our cardboard supplier is FSC accredited.

What about preservation?

Finally, while some manufacturers offer product warranties, caskets will not preserve the remains. Caskets may help protect the remains from outside elements in conjunction with an appropriate outer burial container, but no casket can prevent post-mortem decomposition.

Natural Material

In recent years the has been a trend to move to more sustainable and natural material for coffins. They often have a softer look and feel and have no ‘hard edges’ or corners and our coffins have no metal fixing and often ties and fixing are made with the materials itself.

The products that we don’t make in the UK are either manufactured by co-operative associations or are covered by a fair trade agre ements ensuring that all workers and suppliers are treated fairly and work in good and safe conditions.

In line with our strong green beliefs, all of our products are manufactured in the most environm entally friendly way. Our products are hand made from locally materials grown and cropped in licensed p lantations.
